Light Cleaveth Unto Light
The Restoration's cosmology: no immaterial matter, the light in all things, and a universe held together by affinity instead of force

I. No immaterial matter — the continuum
Begin with the Restoration's quiet demolition of two thousand years of dualism. D&C 131:7–8:
"There is no such thing as immaterial matter. All spirit is matter, but it is more fine or pure, and can only be discerned by purer eyes; we cannot see it; but when our bodies are purified we shall see that it is all matter."
One substance, on a continuum of refinement. Spirit is not matter's opposite; it is matter's treble register. Which means the old war — spirit good, matter evil; the body a tomb; escape the goal — was never the family's doctrine. The Gnostics lost the pearl here; the Restoration recovers it: matter is not what we fell into. Matter is what spirit is, refined or coarse, and the elements are eternal (D&C 93:33). There is no exit from materiality on offer, because none is needed. There is only purification — of matter, and of the eyes that would see its finer registers.
II. The light in all things
Then the animating principle. D&C 88:6–13 — the light of Christ, traced through its offices: the light of the sun, of the moon, of the stars; "and the earth also, and the power thereof"; the light "which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed."
Read the claim at full strength: every particle in the universe carries this light — is enlivened, lawed, and held by it. Physics measures the regularities; section 88 names their source: not an impersonal field but Him, distributed — "he is in the sun, and the light of the sun... he is in the moon..." The laws of nature are not a machine God built and left running. They are His presence, in and through all things, experienced by matter as law and by hearts as light. And so D&C 88:47: "any man who hath seen any or the least of these hath seen God moving in his majesty and power." Cosmology is theophany at low resolution.
III. "Cleaveth" — the binding force is affinity
Now the verse the piece is named for. D&C 88:40:
"For intelligence cleaveth unto intelligence; wisdom receiveth wisdom; truth embraceth truth; virtue loveth virtue; light cleaveth unto light; mercy hath compassion on mercy and claimeth her own..."
Look at the verbs: cleave, receive, embrace, love, claim. These are not the verbs of mechanics. They are the verbs of courtship — and "cleave" is Genesis 2:24's own marriage-verb: a man shall leave... and cleave unto his wife. Section 88 asserts that the universe's fundamental interactions run on the marriage-verb: like recognizes like, and moves toward it. Attraction as recognition.
And here the lens speaks, marked plainly as lens: if every particle carries the light of Christ, then the mutual attraction of matter — the drawing of mass to mass that the laboratory names gravity and describes flawlessly without explaining — is, at the deepest register, the light in matter cleaving to the light in matter. Creation coheres by affinity. "By him all things consist" — hold together (Col 1:17) — because everything in it is drawn to Him in everything else. The universe is not held at gunpoint by force. It is held the way a family is held: each part recognizing its own light in its neighbors, and refusing to let go. The equations remain true and remain the laboratory's; what this register adds is the why under the how: gravity is what love looks like at the resolution of stones. (lens, flagged — a devotional reading of received texts, not a scientific claim)
IV. The obedient creation
And matter, in the Restoration's cosmology, is not inert — it responds. D&C 88:25: "the earth abideth the law of a celestial kingdom, for it filleth the measure of its creation, and transgresseth not the law." The earth is spoken of as a keeper of law — a covenant-keeper. Helaman 12 runs the comparison to our shame: the dust obeys, the hills obey, the sea obeys, "and thus we see... how quick to hearken" the elements are, against the slowness of hearts. And Enoch heard the earth speak: "the earth mourned" — a voice from the ground, weary, asking for rest and sanctification (Moses 7:48). The creation is not scenery. It is a congregation — junior to us in agency, senior to us in obedience — already keeping the law we are still learning, already awaiting the sanctification promised it (D&C 88:25–26; the sea of glass of 77:1).
V. The sealing power — matter consenting
Which reframes the miracles, and especially the sealing power. When Nephi receives it (Helaman 10), note the grounds: "thou hast not feared them, and hast not sought thine own life... I will bless thee forever... all things shall be done unto thee according to thy word." The power over the elements is granted precisely to the man who has stopped grasping — 121's constitution again: the powers of heaven flow only to the one who will not compel. And then the elements obey him — famine, rain, mountains (Ether 12:30: Zerin, removed at a word; Jacob 4:6: "we truly can command in the name of Jesus and the very trees obey us, or the mountains, or the waves of the sea").
Read it through the cleaving-cosmology and the miracle changes character: matter, carrying the light, recognizes the light in the consecrated person and consents. The sealing power is not a override-code that forces nature. It is nature's trust — the elements yielding to the one whose will has become safe, because it has become the Lord's. The brother of Jared's stones are the type-scene: he refined rock to transparency, carried it up, and asked for the touch — and the stone received the light and held it for a year's crossing. Matter cooperates with condescension. The universe's deep law is that everything yields to love and nothing yields to force — which is why the beast, for all his engines, can vandalize the lamps and never repeal the government. (the texts are received; the consent-reading, lens)
VI. Fulness of joy — the wedding of spirit and element
And the cosmology's destination is the collection's oldest verse: D&C 93:33–34 — "spirit and element, inseparably connected, receive a fulness of joy; and when separated, man cannot receive a fulness of joy." The continuum's two registers, coarse and fine, are meant not merely to coexist but to be wed — inseparably: the resurrection as matter and spirit sealed past all parting, the body not escaped but glorified, the pearl at the bottom of every descent. "The elements are eternal" — creation is not disposable packaging around souls; it is half of the marriage joy requires.
So the whole cosmology, gathered into one motion: one substance, refining; one light, indwelling all of it; one binding law, and the law is cleaving — like unto like, light unto light, mercy claiming her own; a creation already obedient, waiting on us; power over the elements granted only to the consecrated, because matter consents to love and to nothing else; and the end of the whole physics a wedding — spirit and element, inseparably connected, fulness of joy. "That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day" (D&C 50:24). The universe is not winding down toward cold. Along its deepest register, it is cleaving its way home — light finding light finding light, until the whole body is full of it (D&C 88:67), and needs no lamp.
Seams, gathered: D&C 131:7–8; 93:29–36; 88:6–13, 25–26, 40, 45–47, 67; 50:24; Helaman 10 and 12; Ether 12:30; Jacob 4:6; Moses 7:48; Colossians 1:17; and D&C 77:1 — received and checkable. The lens, flagged in bold where it stands: gravity-as-cleaving is a devotional register under the physics, never a replacement for it; the sealing power as matter's consent stands on Helaman 10's stated grounds; and the whole is offered as what section 88 calls itself — a way of seeing God moving in his majesty, free of charge, any clear night. Test it against love — and against the sky. The gathering is the work.
