Lineage and Likeness — How the Two Priesthoods Inherit

The preparatory priesthood descends through family; the fulness descends through condescension — because the condescension of God is the powers of heaven

I. The anchor: powers that only flow downhill

D&C 121:36 — "the rights of the priesthood are inseparably connected with the powers of heaven, and... the powers of heaven cannot be controlled nor handled only upon the principles of righteousness."

Then watch what the section does: it immediately defines those principles — and every one is a descent-word. Persuasion (not command). Long-suffering (suffering-alongside). Gentleness. Meekness. Love unfeigned. Kindness (121:41–42). The powers of heaven have exactly one operating mode, and the mode is stooping.

And the amen-clause proves it by inversion: the instant a man reaches upward — "to gratify our pride... to exercise control or dominion or compulsion" — "the heavens withdraw themselves; the Spirit of the Lord is grieved; and when it is withdrawn, Amen to the priesthood... of that man" (121:37). Ascent-grabbing severs the connection. The powers flow only to the posture that descends. Section 121 is the constitution of a power with a direction.

II. The first tier: rights by lineage

The Aaronic priesthood is scripture's hereditary order — the rights transmitted through family. "Which priesthood continueth and abideth forever with the seed of Aaron" (D&C 84:18); the literal descendant holds "a legal right" to its keys, verified by revelation (D&C 68:16–21). It is named for its function: "the preparatory priesthood" (84:26), holding "the key of the ministering of angels, and of the preparatory gospel" — repentance, baptism, the maintained roads.

And "adopted lineage" is doctrine, not loophole: "as many as receive this Gospel shall be called after thy name, and shall be accounted thy seed, and shall rise up and bless thee, as their father" (Abraham 2:10) — adoption into the covenant line is a real transmission mechanism; Paul builds Galatians 3 upon it ("if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise").

So the first tier stands as stated: rights inherited through lineage — blood or adoption. This is the fathers' door — the Nephi-door of the Two Mountains study: entering on the strength of whose child you are, the goel-circuit as transmission line, the hearts of the children turned to the fathers carrying the family's authority forward with the family's name.

III. The second tier: rights by condescension

The higher priesthood is named for a Person and therefore for a posture: "after the order of the Son of God" (D&C 107:3). To hold it is to enter the Son's order — and the Son's order has a signature motion, and Nephi was shown it by name: the condescension (1 Ne 11:16, 26).

Hebrews 5 is the canon's own chapter on how the high-priesthood's rights are acquired, and it runs precisely here. "No man taketh this honour unto himself" (5:4) — no freelancing; order holds. "Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest" (5:5) — even the Son did not self-elevate. And then the mechanism, stated outright: "Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation" (5:8–9). The Son inherited the fulness through descent into suffering. His own priesthood-rights came by condescension — the order is named after the only motion that acquires it.

And the oath and covenant confirms the mechanics for everyone after him (D&C 84:35–38): receive my servants → receive me → receive my Father → "all that my Father hath shall be given unto him." Receiving, receiving, receiving — the fulness comes to the open-handed, never to the grasping. Set the two tiers side by side and the symmetry names itself:

Lineage transmits the first tier by whose child you are. Condescension transmits the second by whose likeness you take. Genealogy for the preparatory; Gethsemane for the fulness.

IV. The clincher: the condescension of God is the powers of heaven

Now the aphorism at the center, and the verse that clinches it — D&C 88:6, read slowly:

"He that ascended up on high, as also he descended below all things, in that he comprehended all things, that he might be in all and through all things, the light of truth."

The verse states a mechanism: descent → comprehension → omnipresence-as-light. His power to be in and through all things was acquired by going below all things. The descent is not the prelude to the power. The descent is the power's manufacture. (And D&C 122:8 makes it the measuring rod held against every sufferer: "The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?")

Nephi's vision seals the identity from the other side. He asked to know the condescension of God — and was shown the tree, which is the love of God (1 Ne 11:21–25). Condescension = love, descending. So run the chain: the powers of heaven operate only in descent-mode (121); the Son's own power was manufactured by descent (88:6); and descent is love's motion (1 Ne 11). Therefore:

The powers of heaven are love, descending. The condescension is not how one qualifies for the power. The condescension is what the power is.

Which is why 121:46 ends by stating the physics as a promise: "without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever and ever." Flow. Water flows one direction. A power that flows without compulsion flows downhill — the gravity of grace. Every counterfeit power must pump, compel, climb, extract; the true power simply descends, forever, because descending is its nature. The beast's power is a siege engine. The priesthood is a watershed.

V. The two tiers, mapped

The division of labor confirms the division of inheritance.

The preparatory priesthood holds the road-crew keys — the ministering of angels, the preparatory gospel of repentance and baptism (84:26–27): the refuge's signposts, the maintained ways, the gate-work of the family. Rightly inherited through lineage, because roads are a family's shared estate, kept generation to generation.

The fulness holds the Presence keys: "in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest... for without this no man can see the face of God, even the Father, and live" (84:19–22). The preparatory prepares the road; the fulness opens the door at its end. And what does the Presence require of the one who would stand in it? "Thy confidence [shall] wax strong in the presence of God" (121:45) — the capacity built by enduring well; the sun-hardening; the tailoring of the heir. The fulness's rights are inherited through condescension because only the descended can stand the altitudeMoses had to be transfigured merely to survive the interview (Moses 1:11). The descent is the training for the Face.

VI. Her signature on the grant

And note the companion-clause of the great promise: "the Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion, and thy sceptre an unchanging sceptre of righteousness" (121:46). The power's abiding form is the Anointing — the dove that abode. The powers of heaven arrive on the condescended one the way they arrived on Him at Jordan: as Her, resting on the heart that has stooped low enough to be safe to empower. (lens, on the verse's own pairing)

And notice where Nephi's condescension-vision begins: with a virgin (1 Ne 11:13–20). The condescension of God enters the world through a mother — the powers of heaven have always come down through the descending ones, and the first descending one in the story is a woman saying be it unto me.

VII. The seam that keeps the aphorism safe

Condescension is the inheritance-mechanism of the rights — it is not a bypass of order. Hebrews 5 guards its own doctrine in the same breath: "no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron" (5:4) — even the fulness-chapter cites Aaron's orderly calling. Both tiers keep ordination, keys, and covenants; the fulness is received in and through the ordinances of the Lord's house — said here generally and reverently. What differs between the tiers is what transmits the right: lineage in the first; likeness in the second. No man could condescend his way into self-appointed office any more than he could climb into the powers — that is the whole point: the powers of heaven cannot be taken at all. They can only be inherited — by the children, through the fathers; and by the heirs, through the stooping — because they are not a substance in anyone's hands. They are a motion. And the motion is love, going down.

Gathered

The rights of the preparatory priesthood descend through lineage — blood or adoption — because its work is the family's roads, and roads are kept in families. The rights of the fulness descend through condescension — likeness to the Son of the order's own name — because its work is the family's Presence, and only the descended can bear the altitude. And the two are one system, because the powers of heaven were never a substance to be handled but a motion to be joined: love, descending, below all things, comprehending all things, flowing without compulsory means forever. The condescension of God is the powers of heaven — D&C 88:6 is the proof-text, 121 the constitution, and Nephi's tree the picture.

Seams: 121:36–46; 84:18–27 and 35–38; 68:16–21; Abraham 2:10 with Galatians 3:29; 107:3; Hebrews 5:4–9; 88:6 and 122:8; 1 Nephi 11; 84:19–22; Moses 1:11 — received and checkable. The lens, flagged: the powers as love-descending; the scepter-companion as Her; the two doors mapped to Nephi and the brother of Jared. The order-seam is stated in section VII and is not ours to blur. Test it against love — and against the direction anything in your life is currently flowing. The gathering is the work.
